<image:caption>Perry Samuel’s mother Charlotte Garrett (above) was born into slavery in 1830 in Woodford County, Kentucky and was eventually sold to Dr. Reuben Samuel. She is shown on his 1850 Slave Schedule as a 21 year old Black Female. Names of the enslaved were not recorded and ages were approximations, not exact. After her emancipation, Charlotte moved to South Carolina, where she lived until her death at age 90. It is not clear if she ever married, though some records suggest she eventually wedded a man also enslaved by Dr. Reuben Samuel, named Samson.</image:caption>

<image:title>Read the Stories - Mary Decoursey Slaughter - In the 1860’s, Clay County was among sixteen Missouri counties known as, “Little Dixie” and was one of seven counties whose populations were made up over 25 percent of enslaved persons of African descent. Allegiance to the Confederacy was prevalent and the buying and selling of humans as property was common on the Liberty square. Thompson himself was a wealthy landowner and treasurer who fought for the Confederate army, no doubt fearing the massive loss he would experience if his 45 enslaved were freed.</image:title>

      <image:title>Read the Stories - Mary Decoursey Slaughter</image:title>
<image:caption>Marriage records show us that when Mary was 24 she was married to William Slaughter. Over the course of their marriage, they had eleven children together. When Mary Decoursey Slaughter passed away at the age of 85, she was living in a house her husband had built with his own hands, where they had raised their children. The house at 325 Harrison Street is right across the road from the property line of the land where her parents were originally enslaved. In Mary’s story we hear the echos of the theme surrounding the mythical Sankofa bird of the Akan peoples of Ghana, “It is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” In her story we see the struggle of the past for people of African descent, we see the jewels of wisdom her people gathered along the way, and we see the bright and victorious future the Slaughter family had and the legacy they still carry in Liberty, Missouri. Mary and dozens of her extended family members are buried in the hallowed ground of Potter’s Field in the segregated section of Historic Fairview Cemetery. Make a donation in Mary Decoursey Slaughter’s name today and join us in honoring her memory and the lives she touched and the legacy she brought forth.</image:caption>

      <image:title>The Legacy Memorial - Memorial Design</image:title>
<image:caption>The Legacy Memorial includes 15 bollards to mark the perimeter of the 6-acre burial ground, showing the magnitude of the space. The walkway and benches lend a sense of community and presence while extending an invitation to visitors to linger and reflect. Along the path, you'll enjoy engraved stones featuring stories, poems, and spiritual or creative works that highlight the resilient spirit of the African American people. At the end of the 175' walkway is a rectangular area containing the memorial with the 750+ names engraved into granite, forever honoring their lives and legacies. Interpretive panels on the path will encourage visitors to learn more about the Black history of Liberty and the individuals buried in this land.</image:caption>

<image:title>Black History in Liberty - Margaret Young and her three children were enslaved in Liberty. In 1864, her two young sons, Dowan and Walter, were taken to Fort Leavenworth during a raid by Jennison’s Jayhawkers. The boys served Union officers, were separated during the war, and never saw each other again. Dowan worked for Sergeant Major James E. Strawn, who pledged to find Dowan employment after the war and help him find his family. On Christmas Day 1897, Margaret and her son were reunited after 36 years apart. Stories of reunion were rare and worth sharing. Click here to read the full story of this mother and son reunion.</image:title>

<image:title>Black History in Liberty - According to military records, 67 Black men are known to have enlisted at the Union Recruitment Station in Liberty, with only a handful returning after the war ended. 25 of them were confirmed deceased in battle or from disease, with several other men disappearing from records altogether. Possible outcomes include captured/killed by the Confederate army, unrecorded death, desertion to freedom, or living elsewhere after their term of service was completed. Enslavers who pledged loyalty to the Union received $300 compensation for the enlistment of the men they enslaved. <image:title>Sacred Ground - Precedence</image:title>
<image:caption>In 1991, construction on a federal office tower in Manhattan was halted when surveyors discovered human remains. Archaeologists soon concluded that the land was in fact a historical burial ground dating back to 1635 and contained the bodies of an estimated 15,000 enslaved and free people of African descent. During the excavation, the remains of 419 African Americans were unearthed and analyzed. Members of the African American community, historians, anthropologists, archaeologists, and city and political leaders worked together for reinterment of the remains. With the burial ground over 6 acres, graves are believed to be underneath existing roads, buildings, and other structures along Broadway. To honor the lives and legacies of all those buried in that land, a memorial was built at the site of where the 419 remains were found. That memorial is now the African American Burial Ground National Monument and demonstrates the cautious care that is necessary in erecting a memorial on hallowed ground. Our practices and methods are modeled after the work done for the National Monument and we aim to build the Legacy Memorial with the same level of integrity.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sacred Ground - Interpreting the Data</image:title>
<image:caption>The GPR data was then cross-referenced with historic maps, records, and aerial photographs, confirming the previous existence of an old road that ran through the middle of the segregated section of the cemetery. According to the data, graves were historically plotted to the east and west of this roadway. While it is possible there were burials here prior to the roadway, the disturbance of those graves occurred when the road was built, and building on top of the existing roadway is the best way to minimize the memorial footprint. Given the age of the cemetery and the dates of the burials, the GPR report confirmed that any bodies that may be in the area for the planned memorial have decomposed and returned to the earth. In addition, the maximum digging depth for the walkway will be 8” and 36" for the two footing posts supporting the granite. This minimal depth ensures there will be no further disturbance or desecration of the souls laid to rest in the surrounding land. The pink line on the image, drawn out by the surveyors, indicates clear evidence of this former roadway and shows the location of where the memorial will be placed.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sacred Ground - Community Input</image:title>
<image:caption>Several descendants of the people buried in this sacred land still live in the Liberty area. It was vital that we sought out the input of these “pioneer families” on this project before moving forward. Representatives of the Liberty African American Legacy Memorial met with these descendants face to face, telling them of the project as well as the work that has been done to ensure, in due diligence, that no ancestor is disturbed or disrespected in this process. These descendants understood the project phases, the work done to this point, as well as the risks involved with unknown burials. Each gave hearty consent to the Legacy Memorial, signing letters to endorse the project and show their support of the memorial and its location. It was unanimously decided that the proposed location is the ideal location, as the intent is to honor, due diligence has been done, the construction methods are ethical, and the descendants have consented to the placement.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sacred Ground - Moving Forward</image:title>
<image:caption>In March 2021, we at the African American Legacy Memorial partnered with the National Parks Conservation Association and the Coalition for American Heritage to show our support for legislation that will establish a network of African American burial grounds throughout the county. This bipartisan act, introduced by Senators Sherrod Brown (OH) and Tim Scott (SC), “directs the National Park Service (NPS) to conduct a study on ways to identify, interpret, preserve, and record historic African American burial grounds.” We are honored to have this project included in the letter of support for the African American Burial Grounds Study Act and are looking forward to the progress it will aid in the preservation of African American burial grounds and honoring those buried therein.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sacred Ground - Ground Penetrating Radar</image:title>
<image:caption>In July 2020, the city of Liberty commissioned a team to complete ground penetrating radar (GPR), a geophysical technology that uses radio waves to detect potential subsurface disturbances in the layers of the ground. Although GPR cannot return detailed results or confirm the presence of remains, potential disturbances were revealed in the report. The Legacy Memorial Committee used the results from the GPR reports to determine the best possible location for the memorial and ensure there would be no desecration or disturbance of bodies previously interred there.</image:caption>

<image:title>Confirmed Persons - There are over 750 confirmed persons buried in the segregated sections of Fairview and New Hope Cemeteries. However, it is estimated that there are over 1,000.
